- Informational interviews are another effective career strategy if you do your homework in advance, and have realistic expectations. If your goal is to leave the meeting with a direct lead to an open role, you'll likely be disappointed. But worse, you'll have missed an opportunity to create an ambassador. Ambassadors are contacts who are willing to go to bat for you in your job search by providing introductions, key information, or referrals. In order for someone to be an ambassador, they have to clearly understand your career target, value, and message, and form a favorable impression of you, so they're willing to help. The best way to create an ambassador is to focus on the relationship, not the outcome during your informational meeting. Think about what impresses you when you meet someone new.
