- When matrix organizations are created, people come at problems with new perspectives. Those perspectives can generate new opportunities. I worked in a call center once where the issue seemed like it was an operational one. We didn't think managers were driving the right behaviors. When the matrix organizations got involved and the silos came down, HR and learning and development got involved. They pointed out that it wasn't an operational issue, it was a hiring issue. We were bringing in the wrong people. The matrix helped us uncover the real problem we were facing. I worked on another situation where we had a strategy team, an operational team and a technology team. We wanted to do some cool new testing in the call center but IT couldn't handle building what we wanted. When the strategy team got involved, they knew of an external vendor that had some of the capabilities we were interested in.
