- Defining the future state of the organization only tells us where we want to be, it doesn't tell us how to get there. For that we need to carry out a gap analysis. You begin by defining exactly what needs to be changed, modified, or retained in the current organization to reach the new capability. By analyzing the gap between the current and the future state, we're able to plan and select which projects and other activities are needed to get there. So here are a few useful tips you may find helpful when analyzing the gap. First of all, good documentation rarely exists at the current state. So make sure the future state that you design is captured and baselined and available for future change programs. Then use interactive facilitative workshops to identify the key differences between the current and the future state.
