- A retrospective needs action items. It's the best mechanism for addressing the team's ongoing challenges. Without action items, the team would just be on a treadmill without making any improvements. There are three challenges you should watch for when trying to create action items. The first challenge is too much talk and not enough action. Sometimes this is called a Kvetchrospective. For those of you who don't speak Yiddish, this term is derived from the word fetch. When someone's fetching, they're complaining without any thought of making things better. Try to keep everyone focused on improvement and not just fetching. The second challenge is the opposite. The team is creating too many action items without enough discussion. They get bogged down with small fixes.
