Finding and choosing the right stories
- Before picking a story to tell, you always have to start with the end in mind. Ask yourself these two questions. First, who's my audience? And second, what is it I want them to think, feel, or do after hearing a story that they probably weren't going to do on their own? And once you've got a clear answer to both those questions you're ready to go looking for a story. But until then, you really don't know what you're looking for. And the reason is that in training, you're using these stories for a particular purpose. You know, not just to entertain people. You're either trying to teach them something, motivate them to do something, or create some kind of connection with them. So once you can answer those two questions here are the most productive three things to look for to find a story: a success, a failure, or a moment of clarity around that thing that you want them to think, feel, or do.
