Find breathing room in your schedule
- To slow things down we need a plan. The most powerful tool in creating that plan is one that anyone can use, a schedule, your calendar. To get the most done while maintaining control, how much of your day should be scheduled? And the answer depends on the person and their job responsibilities. In my experience, the amount you schedule should be less than 80% of your total day. This means that in a traditional eight-hour workday, we'd be looking at about six and a half hours per day that should be scheduled and one and a half hours blocked out and left empty. And if you're in a position that gets interrupted a lot, such as tech support or sales, you might need more, perhaps as much as 60% of your time that is unscheduled. Now I know this sounds weird, so let me be clear. I'm suggesting you schedule time in your calendar when nothing should be scheduled. Block it out and protect that time, call it breathing room.
