- The second item in the Elevator Pitch Framework is customer need. It asks us to identify a single need or a problem that exists for our target customer. If selecting a target customer helps us zoom in, identifying a customer need gives us clear focus. A customer needs should be real, something that exists for your target customer. That may sound trivial, but it's worth emphasizing because you often see solutions in search of problems. In other words, many product ideas emerged from looking at what a new technology innovation can do or by envisioning a type of implementation. That's not necessarily a problem. It can definitely lead to great things. But at the end of the day, solutions must address real problems or satisfy needs. In fact, great entrepreneurs fall in love with problems, not solutions.
