- I got into food very early on, I began to associate cooking with femininity, and power and strength. Because in my house, that's where all the power was. All the women were always in the kitchen. That's where the big decisions got made. That's where the hierarchy of the house was decided. And that's where all the gossip was. Even though I come from India, which is traditionally a very patriarchal system. I always had great examples. Through the women in my life, through my grandmother, through my aunt's, through my mother. My mother came to this country with nothing and she made a life for ourselves. She forged a path for herself professionally, and even my grandmother did that in India. She was a school teacher, she started the first Montessori School in her town. And so I was surrounded by women who worked around the system. Who are illustrious nonetheless and that's how I learned to make a way regardless.
