Expanding opportunities versus zero-sum
- Some people see the world as zero-sum, if I win, you lose. Others see it as expanding and there being more opportunities that come from working together versus going things alone. I suggest you take the latter approach as you run your consulting firm. If you approach things as zero-sum, you might close off relationships and miss opportunities you could otherwise participate in if you saw the world differently. I love when I run into people who say, oh, you do leadership stuff and I do leadership stuff, therefore we're competitors. Instead of seeing the world as a bigger opportunity if we worked together. One individual wanted to come and be a trainer on my team. When we started talking, he insisted that any training he delivered would have his brand on it. I said, I don't understand how that's us working together and creating a bigger pie. We decided not to work together because he saw it as zero-sum.
