Exercise: What's really being said

- For this exercise, we are going to give you a scene of dialogue without any tags and with no interiority. As you'll see, the dialogue is pretty bland and can go many different ways. It's your job as the writer to not only figure out who the two people are in the conversation, and remember, one of them also needs to be a POV character, but also what's really going on in the scene. You can see the dialogue on the screen, but you'll also find it in the handout called "What's Really Being Said?" that's included with this lecture. Take about 20 to 30 minutes to try and transform the dialogue into the three types, straightforward, subtext, and deceitful, and add interiority to your POV character to give this scene meaning. So by the end of the exercise, you should have three different scenes. Feel free to add some lines to the dialogue if that helps you flesh out the scene a bit more.
