- How many projects in your innovation pipeline were selected because someone had an instinct, bias, or gut feeling? While passion and emotion are often associated with famous innovators, feelings shouldn't determine whether or not an idea moves into the development phase. To judge an idea's potential using objective and strategic criteria, I'm a big fan of an exercise called idea screener. Successful brands such as Volvo and the Nielsen Company, have used it in their front-end innovation process to determine their most viable ideas. In your own company, share this technique with teams who are directly responsible for innovation. Start facilitating the screening process by identifying one to three ideas currently in your pipeline for those teams to evaluate.
