Ethics is how you show up at work every day

- Ethical behavior is a requirement for good standing in business, and it's mandatory for continued employment. Of concern, however, is that ethical behavior is not always black and white, nor is it always easy. Conflicts of interest, contradictory requirements or processes, fear of failure, and businesses pressures can all affect ethical behavior. Hi, I'm Bob McGannon, and in my 35-year-long career I have learned that ethics are you. It's not simply for an academic classroom. Ethics is how you show up at work every day. In his book, The Origins of Ethical Failures, Dennis Gentilin talks about the temptation that business pressures can place upon people that create ethical failures when he said, "Dilemmas pitted a moral value against basic self-interest, "and in the end self-interest won out, "despite what was ethical and right "being clearly distinguishable "from what was unethical and wrong." To make sure he's not talking about your behavior or mine, we need to be informed and prepared. That's the purpose of this course. Through discussion and looking in on employee scenarios, we'll examine the most common items that lead to ethics issues and prepare ourselves so we can avoid them.
