- Ethics in business are essential. Edward Hennessy, retired CEO of AlliedSignal said, "Ethics must begin at the top of an organization "and the chief executive must set the example." A written code of conduct communicates a company's commitment to ethical practices. It defines how employees are expected to behave, but it's not possible to think of every potential situation employee might encounter. As the HR pro, this is where you play a meaningful role in communicating potential ethical landmines, and training employees on how to handle them. Start by establishing an ethical decision-making framework for employees to follow. This will help them consistently make ethical decisions that are aligned to the company's values. An effective framework encourages employees to trust their gut. In other words, ask employees if a situation makes them feel uneasy.
