Establishing a compelling vision

- A key factor in motivating your team members is creating an environment with a clear focus. Why is this important? A clear focus, well-communicated and continually reinforced by you as the team's leader, is essential to engaging hearts and minds and aligning objectives and driving action. A common mistake I see and one you'll want to avoid is coming up with an overly generalized vision or mission, for example, we put customers first, or we deliver world-class service. These are so generic and uninspiring that they really don't help much in guiding decisions. Here are three tips to help you create a meaningful and memorable vision. First, keep it simple and specific to your organization. Take a look at Ben and Jerry's vision statement. Our aim is to make the best possible ice cream in the nicest possible way.
