- Before you work on establishing a relationship, let's assume you've done a self-assessment to better understand who you are and what your purpose is and where you're going and what you have to offer, and let's say you've identified the diversity of people that you need in your network and the many places that you can find them. Now is the time to take that leap of establishing the relationship, and this may be the most uncomfortable part of building a diverse professional network because it requires you to make contact with other people who you do not know, and there are three ways that you can do this. First, live events. Let's say you're in a live social event, and you're at the conference reception or at the same table for lunch or sitting beside someone in a session.
