- Like most of us, I've had jobs where on my first day of work, I was thrown in without having a clue about what I was supposed to do. A few years ago, I was director of education at the Film and Television Tech Training Center for Youth. We delivered after-school arts programs for at-risk kids. On my first day, I was told to go through the old files and learn what I could about the job. That was the full extent of my training. Scary, huh? Unfortunately, most organizations don't train their workers, they just have you start without much preparation or any real guidance. Then if you make a mistake, which invariably you will, it's your fault. That's a terrible way to begin a new job. On top of that, one of the downsides of the working world, and life in general, is that people don't communicate very well. We're not trained to be straightforward.
