- Social support helps us to stick with our commitments and it's also a critical part of building energy capacity as a strategy in itself. A recent study showed that feeling isolated was actually worse for someone's overall health than living a sedentary lifestyle, eating a poor diet, or even smoking cigarettes. Since the brain's biggest fear is running out of resources, when we feel like we're all alone in this world it's a scary thought that causes a lot of stress in our body. Unfortunately, as people start to feel tired or spread too thin, one of the first things we tend to do is push aside social commitments. When we feel lousy the last we want to do is reach out for help because we don't want to burden anyone else. But when we do reach out to others for support the brain produces another very helpful chemical, called Oxytocin, that actually makes the brain and body much more resilient to stress.
