Empathy starts with you
- In his classic book "The 7 Habits "of Highly Effective People," author Stephen Covey offers an important insight. "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; "they listen with the intent to reply." So often, we want to be efficient communicators. So we listen long enough to figure out what the other person might be saying and then we jump into the conversation with our own opinion or solution. When the conversation ends, we take pride in having articulated our perspective so well. But if you're going to develop empathy, you need to approach conversations very differently. Remember, we listen much faster than most people can talk, that's not something we can do much about. That's why our brains tend to wander, crafting responses before the other person even finishes talking. You don't need to stop your brain from taking side journeys during a conversion.
