Empathy blind spots

- Dr. Tasha Eurich is an organizational psychologist and executive coach. She and her colleagues have studied self-awareness for more than 15 years. Their primary finding? We aren't that good at self-awareness. (chuckling) In fact, even though most people in their studies believed they were self-aware, only 10 to 15% actually met the criteria. They identified two kinds of self-awareness. One is internal, knowing our values and motivations. Many people are good here. But the one most relevant to empathy is external self-awareness. Knowing how others view us. That's where most people don't do very well. We assume other people know our motives but usually they don't. So despite our best intentions, an introverted person can be perceived as standoffish, or an extroverted one is loud and pushy. So let's work on eternal self-awareness.
