Skill Level Beginner
- If you could design the perfect role for yourself, what would it look like? What would you focus your time on? What would you avoid? Now consider the perfect role for a teammate, putting yourself in their shoes. How might they like to modify their responsibilities? Think how using empathy could help you realize how roles might be adapted to improve outcomes. Steering people towards work they enjoy more, handling tasks differently that cause them stress. As skills are increasingly emphasized over job titles, there is more flexibility to optimize roles. However, employees haven't explored their mutually complimentary skills. The first step is to identify current capabilities, thinking about individual strengths and skills, hard skills, functional expertise, and soft skills. So let's discover more about your colleague's varied skills and teamwork capabilities using empathy. Pick three people you often work with. Imagine the four of you have to assemble a complicated piece of furniture with a limited amount of time. Now put yourself in each person's shoes. What task would you prefer to do? How do the tasks match with current roles? First a second project, add one more colleague to the team. Now imagine the five of you have to organize a social event for the department. Again, consider the preferences from each individual's perspective. Okay, have you matched your teams and tasks? How did assignments change by adding the fifth person? What was the optimal combination of skills for each? How much did you know about each person, what they enjoy, what they're good at, what they feel comfortable doing? Did you recognize particular talents? Did you uncover hidden capacity for current work projects? Allocating tasks and crafting roles more specifically can significantly increase employees' efforts, responsiveness and productivity. Reimagine future assignments for your four colleagues, recognizing more of their skills and potential powerful team configurations uncovered by empathetic assessment. Discuss and evaluate current and potential future skills with team members to support career development, planning and management, as well as enhancing your department's and team's capabilities and capacities. We are using different skills to get our jobs done with more communication channels to master and manage, more projects to work on, and more remote team members to coordinate and collaborate with. Match up skills and adjust roles depending on the team and tasks. Enable people to do their best work and boost your results.
