- How many staff should a PMO have? I get asked this question a lot. It's a little bit like asking how long is a piece of string? At least when it comes to traditional PMOs because they're so diverse in the type and scope of work they do. One thing I noticed, though, is that many PMOs tend to be overstaffed. The thinking is the more people who report to the PMO the more important it becomes. I see project managers, administrators of the enterprise project management software, and countless other roles all report to the PMO. But that doesn't add any value.
