From the course: Guy Kawasaki on Turning Life Wisdom into Business Success

Education: A Fundamental Truth

- If you look at the, my career trajectory, my life trajectory, there were a few instances where it fundamentally changed. I went to a school called Kalihi Elementary. And if you're from Hawaii you would know that Kalihi Elementary is not exactly in the best part of town. But anyway, so a sixth grade teacher pulled my parents aside and said get Guy out of the public school system. He has too much potential. And put him into private school system, college prep, the whole thing. And if she had not had that conversation with my parents, and if my parents had not listened to her, I would have a very different life. I don't know where I would be. Probably in Hawaii, maybe retired. But certainly I would not have had the exposure, I would not have had the, probably the financial success either. And it was because this one teacher took it upon herself to convince my parents to change my educational path. And there's a lot of lessons there. So one is that education does make a difference. The second is that if you are a teacher, or a coach, and you know you read about Steve Jobs changing the world and Elon Musk changing the world. And all these people who are quote denting the universe. And you think oh in order to truly dent the universe I have to be a Steve Jobs. I have to be an Elon Musk. I have to be a Richard Branson. It's not true. That basically you could dent the universe by helping one person make a decision like that. I don't think people should feel the pressure to be the next Steve Jobs. I think they should just help as many people as they can and that could be one. A teacher, coach, or mentor. You should be proud of what you do. That's another lesson, another piece of wisdom from my past.
