- So you've finished writing, congratulations! But don't break out the champagne just yet. You're not quite ready to publish or to submit your article to an editor until you've given it a thorough once over with your own editor's eye. It's this phase, the editing phase, that separates the amateurs from the pros, and that'll take your article from a serviceable composition to a polished gem. So how do you get it there? I'm going to show you. I like to print out my articles at this stage so that I can read them on paper. There's something about seeing them off my screen and in a new format that allows me to view them with fresh eyes and see weak spots that I didn't notice before. Now what are you looking for when you read back through your work? A few things. First you want to review your language, see if you can make any of your sentences more concise.
