- Now, it's the day of the big meeting and you're about to walk in. If I were your coach talking to you one last time before you ran into the game, here are the last second bits of advice I'd share. First, be sure to grab all of your materials, the review, supporting documentation, your checklist and a pen or a pencil then I'd just remind you of a few simple and very useful behaviors you want to take with you into the discussion. Obviously, that starts with being on time. 10 minutes early is always better than five minutes late. Now, when the conversation begins, practice effective listening. That means you do not interrupt them when they're speaking, use solid eye contact for most of the meeting and feel free to take a few notes if that helps you focus on what they're saying. Notes actually show them you're listening like an occasional head nod. Plus, when it's your turn to speak, you can use the notes as a reference if that's helpful.
