- About 10 years ago, I signed up to volunteer at a youth center. I was nervous, and I wanted to make a great impression on the middle schoolers I would be working with. As soon as I got to the center on my first day, I knew instantly that I blew it. I was way too overdressed. In trying to feel confident in my day job, I wore a skirt, a blazer, heels, the whole shebang. I didn't bring a change of clothes. And when I reflect on it, I think it was intentional because of my nerves. I wanted to display some sense of authority. Turns out, it was way too much, and the girls in the program didn't trust me, and truly never warmed up to me or listened to me. I was crushed every day, but I learned a valuable lesson about appearances and first impressions. Research shows that first impressions are made in less than seven seconds.
