- So you're in the middle of an interview and everything is going really well when the interviewer asks so, what are your salary requirements? How do you answer this question? It's arguably one of the most important tips I have on negotiation. You don't want to start discussing money before an offer has been made. If it does come up, if the subject of money comes up in the middle of your interview, you want to follow this three step strategy to deflect, reassure, and pivot. Here's what I mean. You want to deflect the conversation away from salary by flatly refusing to answer the question as pleasantly as possible of course. You might say, it's too early to talk numbers just yet or let's wait until an offer has been made to talk about the details of the compensation package. And then, you want to reassure or address their underlying concern that they can't afford you and that they're wasting their time. You might…
