- Many years ago, I worked for a manager who really wasn't a good match for me. We had different styles and I felt he was a micromanager. When I was ready to leave that company, my relationship with him was frustrating and I knew it was time to move on to a more enjoyable position. I really wanted to let him know why. The night before I was to speak with him, I remembered the saying, don't burn bridges. That phrase comes from the idea that if you use a bridge to cross a river, and then burn it, you can't get back over the river if you need to do so in the future. In business, it would translate to breaking a relationship and making it impossible to ever work with that person or that company again. So at that meeting with my manager, I took a deep breath and expressed my thanks for the few years with that company and the experience of working with him.
