Doing a good job is not enough

- Research increasingly tells us that simply focusing on performance is not enough for others to perceive us as effective at our jobs. This can often come as a surprise, especially for people that work in traditionally technical roles. When we're working in a large complex organization, the reality is that unless we're actively managing the way that others perceive us and marketing ourselves that we can end up being out of sight and out of mind. This is far more the case when we're working remotely from other colleagues or managers. If this is the case, then the need for us to be active in promoting ourselves is even higher. This is highlighted by research by SHRM that found that people that worked at head or centralized offices were promoted quicker than those that did not.
