- Today, you hear the terms diversity and inclusion spoken as if they're one and the same. But they're not, they're different. And you need to understand the differences and how they affect the people you work with. In a business context, diversity is bringing people together who have different beliefs, racial and ethnic backgrounds, or different identities. Diversity has four layers. At the core is our personality, which is a compilation of our unique style, behaviors, and preferences. Surrounding that are internal dimensions that include physical or other characteristics we can't control, such as our race or age. The next layer is the external dimension that represents our life experiences, choice of religion, geographic location, or income. The fourth layer is the organizational dimension, which includes status at work or work function.
