- One of my favorite business management authors, Jim Collins, has spent a quarter century studying corporate leaders. And what makes great businesses tick. In his book, good to great, he describes leaders who ran good companies as level five leaders. He observes that CEOs of excellent companies like Abbott Labs or Wells Fargo bank embody a paradox. They have both personal humility and powerful ambition and will. They're fiercely devoted to excellence. But, this is what's most interesting to me, they tend to focus more on building up their companies than they do advancing their own careers, or self interest. Here's was Collins writes; level five leaders channel their ego needs away from themselves and into the larger goal of building a great company. Their ambition is first and foremost for the institution, not for themselves.
