- The road to becoming a dietary tech is pretty clear cut, and offers an almost endless variety of industries and places in which to work. It begins with a variety of courses that include community nutrition, food production and science, sanitation and safety, medical nutrition, food service management, and more. Many diet technician programs may also include science courses in anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and psychology. A dietary tech program also includes 450 hours of supervised practice experience in various community programs, healthcare, and food service facilities. So, of course, after you complete the training, you'll need to pass an exam to become a registered dietary technician. To maintain your certification, you'll need to complete 50 hours of continuing education units every five years. As a dietary technician, the median salary is between 33 and $38,000 per year.
