- HR heroes don't guess at what they need to do. They dig in, they get clarity. They don't have hidden expectations, they have agreements. As the saying goes, diagnosis before prescription. The first diagnostic tool is a compliance audit. Whether you do it in house with an HR consultant or an attorney, there is no substitute for making sure you've covered all of your compliance exposures. HR heroes don't hope they have their compliance act together, they do everything possible to make sure of that fact. This is true whether you have five or 5,000 employees. In the exercise file, I've placed an example of an HR audit, as well as a California addendum to it. The next thing to do is to have agreements with your boss around your strategic priorities.
