- When I was in college, I interned at the headquarters of a big retailer. The offices were modern, everyone was fashionable, and meetings were canceled so we could go out for ice cream. This was a fantasy land for most young professionals. But I was miserable. I wanted to work with older, more experienced people I could really learn from. Wearing a stuffy suit and kitten heels all day sounded like my idea of a great outfit. And I wanted to work long hours early in my career. Going out for ice cream, that was something only meant for the weekends with my friends. This realization was powerful. It allowed me to identify the qualities I wanted in a full-time work environment. Now, when I mentor college students, I tell them to think about the work environment they would thrive in.
