- Once you made the decision to actually do a strategic plan for business development, it's easy to want to jump right in and get started, but hold on, you'll have a little more work to do first. Build the foundation to ensure that your strategic plan is solid. It's tempting to skip this part, but don't do it. If you just take a little time to do some research and some thinking before you jump into the planning part, you'll make stronger, better informed strategic decisions. I learned this lesson the hard way. When I first started designing my strategic planning process for business development, I just built the plan, I just sat down and started writing, and while having a plan was better than having nothing at all, the lack of big picture understanding, lack of education of external factors, and lack of clearly defined ownership and engagement in the plan left me with a strategy that was difficult to implement and produced less than desirable results.
