Discover what a boom moment is and learn about the importance, connection, and impact it has on learner engagement.
(upbeat drum music) (whistle blows) - There are moments when suddenly the pieces fall into place, or you connected all the dots on ideas you were thinking about. This is an ah-ha or what we like to call a boom moment. Boom moments are those ah-ha moments created when someone discovers something inside them they never knew existed. It is a moment when a person experiences a new level of awareness or breakthrough by tapping into the potential within them. In the world of learning this is a clear sign that someone is engaged and has learned something they can apply to their work or life. For example, take an employee who never knew the dynamics of communication styles. They take a communication style assessment offered by a forward-thinking learning team and participate in a workshop that's engaging and experiential with relevant, real-world scenarios, compelling storytelling, and cross-functional input. Then boom, it happens! They learn that people are a blend of all four styles and are predictably different, but you have one primary style that drives your natural behaviors. Suddenly they understand why they struggle to connect with certain individuals on the team, and now they have the tools to help them. That was a quick example to a larger process. Boom is a mindset and an approach to engaging your learners. In order to break through the challenges of engaging your learners, you need to work on your mindset and approach to learner engagement first. This starts with keeping engagement at the center of the work you do, intentionally creating moments that matter and leaving a lasting impression. Face it, this is the experience economy, and your learners want an experience that packs a punch every time. To begin creating boom moments and sharpen your approach to your learners, adopt what I like to call the boom mindset. First thing you need to do is fix your lens. Change your perspective on how you create your learning, which is typically focused on skills first instead of engagement and creating a culture focused on a growth mindset. For example, you could challenge your organization to simplify learning by focusing on building an engaging learning culture committed to building core behaviors of all employees through the people strategy with learning programs focused on communication, emotional intelligence and how to deal with change. Next up, fuel your curiosity. If you become curious about what it takes to engage learners, you will ensure learning has strategic elements of engagement. Here is something you can do daily. Skim learning articles from prominent research and training organizations like Association for Talent Development, ATD, or Society for Human Resources Management, also known as SHRM. Or even learning articles, books, blogs, and podcasts associated with your specific industry. Sign up for a few of those webinars that come to your inbox, then highlight the latest trends in engaging learners. Build curiosity into your daily agenda to fuel new ideas for your organization, and challenge your strategy to evolve to meet the needs of your learners. And finally, number three. Commit to creativity. Commit to being creatively strategic in your approach. Now is the time to think outside the proverbial box like never before. Instead of thinking about how have we done things in the past, ask yourself the question what haven't we tried? When was the last time you experimented with a new way of engaging your learners? What do your learners want and need that they may not be directly saying? - Your learners are your audience, and they're looking for experiences, memorable moments that help them engage and connect to something deeper and bigger than themselves. - You hold the key to unlocking those moments. Consider the concept of boom in your next training or learning design and watch your learners not only engage but apply and share their boom moments across the organization. Can I get a boom in the room? - [Both] Boom! (cymbals clash) (upbeat electric guitar music)
