- Why does your role exist? That's not a trick question. Why has your employer decided to have someone doing your job? I hope you know the answer, because it's a lot easier to give your best if you understand why your work is important and valuable. If you only know what you're supposed to do without knowing why you're doing it, then it's very difficult to stay motivated. When you look at most traditional PMOs, that's exactly what the situation is. They have some vague notion they exist to improve projects, but no clear understanding of what that means. Ask most traditional PMO staff about the purpose of their roles, and they may just tell you the things they do every day. The same is true if you ask the project managers and teams that the PMO supports and the business areas the PMO interacts with. Most worrying of all, the leadership team that is funding the PMO.
