- Whatever your business, you're probably facing a blitzscaling challenger. And you have to ask yourself the question, how do I defend my current market leadership against these blitzscalers? Well, there's three different techniques you can use. You can beat 'em, you can join 'em, or you can avoid 'em. When it comes to beating them, you, as an established company, can decide we are going to go head-to-head, and blitzscale, and run this race. Even though we're a big company, we're going to sprint just as hard as that start-up. And that means having the willingness to sacrifice efficiency for the sake of speed.
It can be done, but it can be challenging. The second approach is to join 'em. Here's where M and A comes in. Maybe you're going to partner with a start-up, or you're even going to buy the start-ups, that you can become the blitzscaler in that particular market. So the third technique for defending against a blitz-scaling competitor is to avoid them. Listen, if you're caught in a winner-take-most or winner-take-all market, and you're unwilling to sprint, either on your own or with a partner, sometimes the best answer is to walk away.
There are a lot of great markets out there. Find a market where you can be the dominant and enduring market leader.
