Why nonverbal communication matters

- When we talk about non-verbal communication, we're actually talking about a number of different channels. We get non-verbal information from hand gestures, voice tone, facial expressions, dress, ornaments like jewelry or watches, posture, makeup, tattoos, or even movement through space. Here's the problem. We often don't realize how powerful our non-verbal communication is. One fascinating study looked at how our non-verbal impacts our effectiveness. Cornell professor, Stephen Ceci, lectured the same course on developmental psychology to a total of 472 students in two different classes. The two classes were verbally identical. The only difference was that in one of his classes, he changed his non-verbal presentation style. He used more non-verbal enthusiasm, such as varying his vocal pitch and using more hand gestures.
