Deciphering confusing messages
- In the first year of my PhD studies, we were asked to take a class outside of our major. So I saw a class in the economics department about creating policy, the link of nonprofit, for-profit, and civic governance. Having already taken two master's level econ classes in my MBA program, I thought I can do this. It only took about an hour before I realized just how wrong I was. Even though the professor was speaking my same language, he was putting the words together in a way that made no sense to me. I couldn't pay attention very well. This is a prime example of the way in which the message itself can be a barrier to effective listening. In this lesson, I will identify some common issues with messaging and what you can do to make sure you are listening effectively.
