Skill Level Beginner
- Hello, my name is Isabel Chapman, and I've worked with people from a range of backgrounds and communities for around 10 years. I've held various different roles working from large corporate housing associations to small charities, to a state-based organizations in London, to support people into work and paid opportunities. I'm really passionate about supporting people into meaningful work that is suitable and sustainable for their lifestyle. Today, we live in such a connected world. We can find out so much information about each other, even people we've never met. Through Instagram, LinkedIn, Google, et cetera. And it can sometimes be confusing and disappointing when comparing ourselves to others, where they appear to be in their career, and where we would like to be in hours. We all know that the majority of us have larger workloads, smaller paychecks, and higher than ever before expectations about work. So it's not surprising that from time to time, we can find ourselves feeling a little disillusioned and disappointed about work. One of the most important things I've learned in my own career, and supporting others with reaching their own goals, is the importance of having resilience in relation to work, and being able to effectively deal with setbacks and disappointment. We all know, even if we have the best job in the world, they will unfortunately be times when you experience setbacks, disappointments, and frustrations at work. However small or huge, it happens to most of us. Often we are sold this myth that as soon as we get to job, everything will become easy. It's all plain sailing from there. However, that's not reality for the vast majority of people. And the job market has massively changed over the last 20 to 30 years. The old approach of joining a company and simply progressing through the ranks is outdated. That approach certainly won't work if you're ambitious, keen to progress and really want to develop your career. So today I'm here to talk to you about dealing with setbacks and disappointments in your role, and some strategies to help you overcome them. By the end of the course, you will be able to explore how and why you might be feeling disappointed in your role. Identify what not to do, learn the power of perspective and discuss the options available to you.
