- As HR professionals, we tend to think of ourselves as working with people, not numbers. Yet everything we know about people, we learn from the quantitative and qualitative data we collect. Quantitative data is data that can be quantified and verified. It's numbers, the number of new hires, number of people who leave the organization, or the number of people enrolled in the medical insurance plan are all examples of quantitative data. Qualitative data is defined as data that approximates or characterizes but does not measure, and has a variety of sources. Interviews are used to identify topics that need to be more fully explored. Interviews can help you understand situations like why turnover is higher in one department than another. Focus groups are small groups of people who meet to discuss a particular topic.
