- I've always loved the stories of Winnie the Pooh, but one of my favorite moments comes from a quote attributed to Pooh's owner, the little boy Christopher Robin. Christopher tells Pooh to, Always remember: you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. That's the kind of message you want to send to an employee you've asked to try to improve performance. A psychological phenomenon called the Pygmalion effect explains why this is important. Over time, your expectations of how someone will act influence how they actually perform. When you tell someone you believe in them, they're more likely to improve.
