- About a decade ago, I visited Plum Village, a monastery led by Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese and Buddhist monk. At that time, I had a really intense job that required a lot of travel and I desperately needed a retreat. Arriving at Plum Village immediately brought a sense of peace over me. We were required to do basic chores as a way to support the community, but also to practice mindfulness. I'd once heard Thich Nhat Hanh speak about mindfulness while washing dishes. He said, "Sometimes you might be thinking "about having tea after the dishes, "or your mind is elsewhere, instead of actually focusing on the task at hand." Then he noted that "if you're not fully focused, "you're not really living." So what exactly is mindfulness and how can it benefit your life and increase your opportunities to experience flow?
