- Every once in awhile a piece of research comes along and disrupts everything. Carol Dweck, a Stanford University professor, led a study just like that. She made a discovery that's so simple yet so important to a person's self-confidence and it's called growth mindset. In a growth mindset, people see their abilities and talents as things that can be developed through effort, persistence, and learning. They tend to think everyone can get smarter if they work at something. On the other side, with a fixed mindset, people think their abilities and smarts are immovable. The fixed perspective here is that people have a certain amount of talent and that's it. So they spend a lot time trying to avoid looking bad. The reason that growth mindset is so important is that when we adopt one, we start to notice our own incremental improvements.
