- I'm sure you've experienced a situation where you've jumped to a conclusion too quickly, only to find that it either doesn't solve the problem or creates more problems. Of course the key is to think before we act which is often easier said than done. Managers dealing with change need to have the tools to creatively analyze challenges and develop effective solutions. Brainstorming is a process which develops a range of ideas before an option is selected. It can be used individually or with groups and can even be used virtually. There are four basic rules to follow. First, focus on quantity. The more ideas generated, the greater the chance of an effective solution. Next is all ideas are welcome. Even those that may sound a little unusual or different. And no criticism. Create a supportive atmosphere where ideas can flow freely and then combine and expand selected ideas.
