- If you ask your employees what they thought their salary paid for, what do you think they would say? Many might provide responses associated with the time spent and or on work, but the reality is that employees are compensated based on the value they bring into an organization. In my first position as a manager I had an employee who was frequently combative towards my leadership style. He argued with me in team meetings, disagreed with customer strategies and disregarded my direction and advice. Ultimately, he was a challenge to work with and this led him down a path of poor performance. As a result of this the employee was terminated and out of anger he approached human resources upset with this outcome. In my conversations with human resources I was able to articulate that this person did not provide sufficient value to the organization.
