Create common empathic context

- You have to work with someone new and want it to go well. Perhaps it's someone in another department who has a tough reputation, or a recent hire. Or it's a colleague whom you know has a different opinion to you on a key issue. It's really important you are able to collaborate with them effectively. You're apprehensive or even dreading it. Don't worry. You can create a positive dynamic so your interactions go well from the outset if you can develop common context. Before you commence any work discussion do some homework. Taking an empathetic approach ask a few people who know this co-worker for any clues to help you understand them. If the person isn't that open this helps get things going well. Meet up with them first on a personal level for a chat and identify areas of connection using any clues you gather to help open up the conversation. "How was your weekend?"
