Core principles of futures thinking
- You may have heard the term futures thinking described as strategic foresight, forecasting, scenario planning, speculative fiction, design futures, among others. For the purposes of this course, we're going to use the terms futures thinking. By the way, did you notice that I used futures, plural, and not future, singular, here? That's because the future may unfold in a variety of ways. There is no one future. No matter how smart we are or how much data we have, we cannot predict the future, and beware of anyone who thinks they can. Simply put, futures thinking is the discipline of imagining and investigating the future, and using those insights to inform decisions in the present. While the field and application of futures thinking is vast, there are a few core principles that make a futures thinking approach different than the more traditional way we've been trained to think about the future.
