- Once you've established a baseline expectation for pay, it's time to build the case for why you deserve more. If you want to ask for an above-average salary, you've got to explain why you're an above-average worker. One way to do this is to keep a brag book, a place where you store information about how you're a better-than-average worker. This might include numerical achievements, like exceeding quarterly quotas or adding to the annual revenue directly, or you might track your educational background and any continuing education and professional development that you take part in. You might reflect on any unique perspectives that your experience brings to the table or personality traits and characteristics that make you an exceptional hire.
