- None of us love difficult conversations, and that includes managers. You're probably not excited to confront a poor performer to talk about what's gone wrong and what needs to change next. And yet you cannot avoid these conversations. I once had a manager on my staff that avoided having difficult conversations with employees. He was fearful that the conversation would just create bad feelings or even more conflict. I had to remind him that the situation, as with any poor performer, wasn't going to resolve itself.
